Minikahda Club: Sweeping views with Greek Revival style

When the roof over the Minikahda Club’s ballroom needed replacing, the rooftop ipe deck was part of the demolition. This was the perfect opportunity for Minikahda to replace it with decking that was not only low maintenance, but more sustainable — TimberTech Advanced PVC.

“Now that I’ve seen TimberTech Advanced PVC, I’m definitely sold — all around, I think it’s better than wood and traditional composite.”

– Jon Wineinger, Greiner Construction

The Minikahda Club owners loved the color of their weathered ipe deck and wanted to recreate it. To get that beautiful, gray look, Jon Wineinger, Project Superintendent, and Jake Machone, Project Manager, recommended the Vintage Collection® in Coastline.
“The gray color really pops against the white, Greek Revival style building,” Jon said. “It also complemented the brass handrails — Coastline really pulled the space together,” added Jake, “it looks awesome.”
Minikahda engineers are thrilled they no longer need to sand, stain, or seal the new low-maintenance TimberTech deck. The old ipe deck required routine maintenance, including restaining every three years.
With plans to build additional decks and verandas in the future, color consistency between materials is critical to the overall club aesthetic — and something wood can’t deliver. When staining different sections of wood months or years apart, fading and weathering make it difficult to ensure the final color will match. But with fade-resistant TimberTech, they can count on consistent, beautiful color that lasts.
Working with curves in a pre-defined space presented a few building complications, but TimberTech rose to the challenge. Our easy-to-cut PVC material made creating that beautifully curved shape easier than if they were using dense hardwood or traditional composite. And Jon and Jake’s crew were able to fit the space easily with our Multiwidth boards — a great option for creating unique, elevated deck designs.
This was Jake and Jon’s first time building a deck with TimberTech, and their experienced team was glad to have the help of our world class customer service to provide tips and tricks throughout the project. “The customer support alone makes TimberTech a superior product and company to work with,” Jake said.
Jon was so impressed with his TimberTech experience that he plans to use it on his own home. “It’s cooler on the feet and splinter free,” Jon said. “Plus, it’s easier to drill than traditional composite, which is great for installation.”
With views of the lake and Minneapolis skyline, the new rooftop deck is a perfect venue for the many events the club hosts year after year. And while the skyline may change, their deck’s performance will continue for decades.
